SAM-e and Osteoarthritis:
In studies in the early 1980-1990's, certain common medications used for treating the pain of osteoarthritis were reported to have a negative effect on proteogylcan metabolism (the body's natural joint lubricant) there by speeding up the cartilage damage.

How should I take SAM-e?
SAMe should be taken on an empty stomach for maximum absorption. SAM-e supplementation can be divided over the course of the day, (i.e. before breakfast and before lunch.) Suggested Dosage: Take 400 mg a day for the first week. If after the first days the desired benefits are not achieved you may gradually increase your level of supplementation. In the second week, take 800mg twice a day. You may increase your intake of SAM-e to as much as 400mg four times a day at the end of the third week for a maximum of 1600 mg. A month or two after you have achieved you desired results, you can try to decrease your dosage to a maintenance level of 400 mg to 800 mg daily.
